8Bitdo’s Game Controllers: Retro-Inspired, Customizable, and Compatible with Apple Devices

8Bitdo Review

8Bitdo is known for their retro-inspired gamepads, usually styled after old Nintendo and Sega controllers. They offer a premium product with a charging dock, rear paddle buttons and an app that lets you customize your profile.

However, some functionality like rumble and amiibo scanning are missing due to a licensing issue. That said, Bluetooth connections work well and input lag is minimal.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth takes the wires out of your life by allowing you to connect earphones, mobile phones and computers without having to worry about a tangle of cords. This can help reduce clutter and increase productivity.

In addition to being a very useful technology for connecting devices without the need for cables, it also helps with things like hands-free voice calls and mobile printing. It has become a common feature in consumer electronics and is available on most computers and phones.

8BitDo’s game controllers are now compatible with iOS, iPadOS, tvOS and macOS devices that support Apple’s gaming APIs via Bluetooth. Up to four controllers can be connected wirelessly, though rumble and motion control are not supported at this time. To pair a device with the controller, first make sure it’s in pairing mode (LED around HOME button is flashing). Then follow the instructions for your host operating system. Next, launch Ultimate Software and customize button mapping, adjust stick & trigger sensitivity and configure vibration control.

USB Dongle

A USB dongle is a small piece of hardware that plugs into the USB port on your computer. It can help you get around obstacles, such as slow wireless networks or the need to pay a monthly fee for data. You can find these devices in a variety of forms, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity dongles.

The most common type of USB dongle is a security device that prevents software privacy by requiring the hardware to be present when using a program. This can prevent piracy and protect against unauthorized access to data. These dongles come in a variety of form factors and can be used to verify authorization and encrypt data.

Other USB dongles are specialized devices that can provide new functionality for your computer. For example, you can use a mouse mover dongle to simulate different cursor movement amplitudes and trajectory. This can be useful when you need to take a quick break in the office without alerting your boss.

Charging Dock

Designed to fit on your nightstand or desk this compact dock helps you save space and reduce clutter by letting you charge both your headset and controllers in one place. It also works with most lightweight plastic cases (not compatible with metal ones) and allows you to connect a third device via the included 5-watt USB-A port to create a centralized charging station for your VR setup.

The dock has some small issues – the quest’s front shields cannot be used because they need to be sleeveless for the charging magnet to successfully connect. Also the USB connection area is a little loose and may occasionally knock around your cable if you’re using dmesg to run builds or test Link functionality.

But overall this is a really neat accessory that addresses just about every complaint I’ve ever had with charging cradles. Compared to the eldritch horror you’re often confronted with opening an Xbox controller this is methodical, considered and even a bit accommodating of disassembly.
